Bar Harbor is busy in the summer, but some trails stay lightly traveled if you know where to look. The Great Head Trail on the east side of town offers ocean views without the crowds you find at Cadillac Mountain. Parking is limited, so plan to arrive early or walk from downtown if you’re staying nearby.

For a longer hike, try the Penobscot Mountain loop. The trailhead is off Route 3, and the path passes through forested sections before opening to coastal views. It’s easy to combine with a stop at Jordan Pond for lunch—the Jordan Pond House serves popovers most of the day.

Even short hikes can give a different perspective on the island. Paying attention to tide times, trail conditions, and local parking rules helps make the visit smooth.
